Robust sales and stable listing activity have combined to result in months of housing inventory dropping to less than 7 months across central Indiana. The October Monthly Indicators Report of BLC? listing service data released by MIBOR today reveals closed sales for the three months ending in October are up 18.0 percent. In October only numbers, closed sales increased 33.0 percent. Pending sales are equally strong, up 18.5 percent for the three-month comparison and up 31.2 percent in October.

New Listings in central Indiana increased 4.4 percent in October, but dipped less than one percent for the three months ending in October. This lessening listing activity coupled with strong sales have brought inventory to 6.8 months for October and 7.3 months for the three month period ending in October.

Prices are stable. The Median Sales Price increased 1.9 percent to $128,750 for the three months ending in October. Averages Sales Price dipped by 0.2. percent in the three-month comparison and 1.2 percent for October alone.

Rice to discuss Libya with McCain, lawmakers this week: aides

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - U.S. Ambassador to the United Nations Susan Rice will meet with lawmakers this week to discuss her controversial remarks about the September attack in Benghazi, Libya, that have caused hurdles for her potential promotion to secretary of state.

The move, announced shortly after a top critic said he would be open to speaking to her, could fuel speculation that she is gunning for the nation's top diplomatic job.

Republicans have attacked Rice for appearing on TV talks shows shortly after the September 11 attack on the U.S. diplomatic mission in Benghazi and saying that preliminary information suggested the assault was the result of protests over an anti-Muslim film rather than a premeditated attack.

Senator John McCain, a vocal opponent of Rice's possible nomination as secretary of state, said on Sunday he would be happy to meet with her about the issue.

A Senate aide said that Rice would meet with McCain as well as Senators Lindsey Graham and Kelly Ayotte, fellow Republicans who have also criticized Rice.

An Obama administration official said Rice and Michael Morell, CIA's acting director, would meet with officials on Capitol Hill but declined to give details about timing.

"She and Mike Morell are meeting with folks on the Hill about Libya this week," the official said.

Rice said last week that her comments about the attack were based squarely on information provided to her by the intelligence community. The presence of Morell in the meetings is likely meant to give weight to that assertion.

President Barack Obama's nominee for the position must be confirmed by the Senate to take the job. Democrats have a majority in the Senate, but Republicans could block his choice.

The U.S. ambassador to Libya, Christopher Stevens, and three other Americans were killed in the attack.

Rice will meet another Republican Senator, Susan Collins, later in the week. A Senate aide said the meeting was arranged at Rice's request. Collins is the ranking Republican on the Senate Homeland Security Committee, which is one of several committees probing the events in Benghazi.

Rice will also meet Senator Joe Lieberman, an independent who chairs the committee, according to a Senate aide.

Rice is considered a top contender to replace Secretary of State Hillary Clinton, who is expected to step down at the end of Obama's first term.

Obama has not said who he wants to nominate for the post, but he bristled this month over Republican criticism of Rice, saying at a news conference that the senators should "go after" him rather than her. White House officials are fond of Rice and she is close to the president.

Senator John Kerry is also considered to be in the running to take over as the top U.S. diplomat.

Retirees who are now buying Sequim real estate are largely retiring from careers as professionals, including financial advisers, CEOs, Techies from Silicon Valley, professional musicians, University Professors, authors, artists, engineers, doctors, dentists, political consultants, Hollywood actors, commercial pilots, Pastors, and many others.? My clients tend to be very smart, mature in every way, and wise, so I listen to what my clients are saying about the economy and their feelings about Sequim real estate and where the market may be going.? I like to say, ?All my clients are smarter than me.?

I like the statement, even if it is a cliche, ?Timing is everything.?? My clients are echoing that with their thoughts.? Here?s why they say they are buying years before they plan to retire and move here.? Sequim Real Estate Buyers

Second, buyers are saying they feel real estate prices are at or near a bottom, and they don?t care if prices are bottomed out.? They only care that they are able to buy the ideal retirement home at a reasonable price at historically low interest rates to manage their monthly retirement cost of living.?

Third, buyers are watching the inventory of the best homes quietly disappear from the MLS as they get sold.? These homes are not being replaced at the same rate.

Fourth, buyers tell me that as they get older, they prefer to reduce the uncertainty in their lives, and they seek to have more financial security.? Waiting to buy Sequim real estate someday actually creates tremendous uncertainty, and could risk their ability to retire in Sequim.? Managing risk and uncertainty is a major factor as this generation of people in their 50?s and 60?s goes into retirement.? This has become a significant factor for many in looking at Sequim real estate now.

Report: Zimbabwe targets human rights activists

JOHANNESBURG (AP) ? Zimbabwe uses laws and beatings by security forces to suppress human rights activists in the southern African nation ahead of elections planned for next year, according to a report released Monday.

The report by the Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders comes as President Robert Mugabe is pushing for constitutional amendments that will allow for elections to end his ZANU-PF party's uneasy coalition government with the nation's main opposition party. That has some worried that Zimbabwe could experience the same repression and violence seen in its 2008 election, in which at least 163 people were killed and some 5,000 were tortured or beaten.

"These stories paint a very, very gloomy picture about the situation of human rights defenders in Zimbabwe," said Thomas Sibusiso Masuku, a former high court judge in Swaziland who contributed to the report.

The report highlights the struggles of several activists in Zimbabwe, mostly targeted by security forces and allegedly arrested for flimsy causes. One activist was detained for weeks and questioned about her work after police took her into custody saying her car was allegedly near the scene of a killing, according to the report. Another activist who was investigating abuses around Zimbabwe's diamond region was repeatedly harassed, it said.

A third activist told investigators that security forces abducted her from her home in 2008 while she was in pajamas. The activist said men repeatedly questioned her about other activists while beating the soles of her feet to the point she suffered from internal bleeding, according to the report. Days later, the report said that security forces took her to a police station. They refused to allow her to be admitted to a hospital, though she received some medical care.

Officials "took her back to prison, with the intravenous tubes dangling from her body," the report said.

Those not beaten often find themselves at the mercy of laws in Zimbabwe that make it difficult to hold opposition meetings or publish critical articles, according to the report. It listed several circumstances where protesters found themselves attacked by riot police while peacefully demonstrating.

Mugabe and ZANU-PF have ruled Zimbabwe since the country gained independence in 1980. But his land reform policies that have laid waste to the country's once-thriving agricultural sector and he has resorted to repression to hold on to power. After the 2008 election, Human Rights Watch accused the ruling party and its allies of involvement in the election killings.

Zimbabwe's government has issued blanket denials of human rights abuses in the past. Rugare Gumbo, a ZANU-PF spokesman, dismissed the report as "nonsense."

"We know all these reports are all sponsored by the West," Gumbo said Monday. "They are preparing in the minds of the international community that when we have elections and ZANU-PF wins, to say they were not free and fair."

He added: "Zimbabwe is a peaceful country and there is no violence."

Officials with the opposition Movement for Democratic Change could not be immediately reached for comment Monday.

While acknowledging that the situation in Zimbabwe is "unlikely to improve in the near future," officials with the group who spoke to journalists Monday in Johannesburg repeatedly declined to specifically say Mugabe needed to leave office to allow for change. However, Arnold Tsunga, a past president of the Zimbabwe Human Rights Association, said a "change in the system of government" might be needed to end the apparent immunity from prosecution those who attack activists enjoy.

"These evil people who attack human rights defenders will have their backs broken ... only if they are not allowed to destroy all the evidence," Tsunga said. "We need to break the cycle of impunity if the country is to move forward."

The Observatory for the Protection of Human Rights Defenders is part of a French organization called the International Federation for Human Rights, an umbrella rights group based in Paris.

Veterinarians: Deck the halls without hurting your pets

OGDEN ? This season, before you unwrap the Christmas ham and decorate the tree, keep in mind the safety of your four-legged family members.

For furry friends, this time of year can spell trouble, from toxic plants and foods to tempting ornaments and power cords used to decorate. With some early planning and a watchful eye, however, you and your pet can have a safe and happy holiday.

Dr. David Hyde and Dr. Scott Van Dyke, veterinarians at Erz Animal Hospital in South Ogden, offer some advice.

The aroma of a holiday dinner not only stimulates our appetites, but it can also get our cat and dog drooling for a bite. However, Hyde and Van Dyke say it?s best to keep the meat on the table and out of pets? reach.

?Bones are never good, and bird bones are especially troublesome because they are so easily broken up,? Hyde said. ?It?s not unusual for a dog to get a serious impaction from bone fragments.?

In addition, filling a plate with leftovers for pets is never wise.

?That?s not the best thing to do because there can be ingredients in the food that can make them very ill,? Hyde said. ?I see at least 10-plus cases every holiday where a pet has eaten something that has made them very ill, even with life-threatening problems.?

Some of the worst foods to share with dogs and cats include grapes and raisins, which are frequently used in stuffing. Both foods have the potential to cause kidneys to shut down in some animals, Van Dyke said. The reason is unknown.

Onions are also very dangerous to both cats and dogs. Thiosulphate, found in onions, is toxic and can cause hemolytic anemia, a condition that damages the red blood cells. Onion toxicity can cause a pet?s red blood cells to burst.

Other foods to keep away from your animals are macadamia nuts, avocados, raw bread dough and chocolate, the veterinarians say. The darker the chocolate, the more dangerous it is to your pet.

?It?s also a good idea to keep meat wrappings out of reach,? Hyde said. ?When I was a kid, my dog died after eating the mesh wrapping around the ham.

?The bag or wrapping smells like the meat, and they are very enticing to your animals, so it?s best to keep them out of reach. And don?t think they won?t get them out of the garbage can, because they will. Dogs, especially, will eat anything and everything.?

Alcohol has the same effect on pets as it does on humans and can cause alcohol poisoning in animals.

Power cords can also cause problems. Both veterinarians say they see, fairly regularly, injuries caused by dogs and cats chewing on holiday-related cords. Try to conceal the cords as much as possible.

Ribbon and tinsel, while not poisonous, are attractive to pets, especially cats.

?Cats love to play with string, and tinsel is one of those dangling decorations that can be very tempting,? Hyde said. ?But they can result in some pretty serious problems in the intestinal tract that requires immediate attention.?

Bright ornaments can also make your pet curious, and many animals will chew and swallow them. Place glass and paper ornaments high on the tree, and pick up any broken pieces, which can lacerate your pet?s mouth, throat and intestines besides presenting a choking hazard.

Place holiday plants high off the ground. Holly, mistletoe, pine needles, poinsettias, Christmas cactus and even water from the tree can all pose serious problems, including vomiting, diarrhea, trembling, difficulty breathing, hallucinations, lethargy and even death.

In fact, a single leaf from any variety of lily is lethal to felines.

And finally, while it?s fun to have family and friends over for the holidays, it could stress out your pet, especially if it?s not used to strangers or isn?t overly sociable. That added stress can actually cause your pet to become ill.

In addition, visitors may unknowingly leave a door open, allowing your pet to escape and become lost.

?Some animals do very well in a social setting with a lot of people, but for some pets, it?s a very stressful time,? Hyde said. ?If that?s the case, keep them apart from the party or confined to a warm, safe and comfortable place during those visits.?

And keep them warm.

?There are some dogs who can handle any kind of temperature,? Hyde said. ?Some huskies love to go outside and lie there in a blizzard, but for others, it can be very miserable.

?The best thing to do throughout the winter is to use common sense. Keep a close eye on your pets and take precautions so everyone can enjoy the season.?

Other languages have a state to defend them and their speakers don't have to contend with a state that acts against their tongue

The erosion of the Catalan language began long before 1939, when the dictator Francisco Franco banned the teaching of Catalan after the Spanish civil war. At the beginning of the 18th century, Philip V of Spain ordered the Spanish language to be introduced into Catalan society. This language imposition was designed to creep into all levels of the Catalan community. The king's rather cynical words were: "The mayor must take the utmost care in introducing the Spanish language, using the most discreet and temperate measures, so that only the effects are felt, and not the measures."

Ever since the restoration of democracy, the Catalan language-immersion used in the Catalan education system has been crucial to holding together a society that seemed to be at risk of unravelling towards the end of the 1970s. The linguistic immersion also helps second-generation immigrants to integrate into Catalonia. These are children whose parents have come here from all corners of the world.

The expediency of this system has been recognised at an international level. The "Catalan system" ? as some countries call it ? has been praised by the EU and various international educational bodies, who use it as a reference point for other countries facing similar situations.

When travelling around the world, Catalans will often find themselves in a bar or at a discussion over dinner, and they will be asked if it's really worth saving the Catalan language. The fascinating thing about this is that the people who ask this question are usually people who have never once questioned the systems their own governments have put in place to protect their languages. I'd never dream of asking why the Swedish protect their language, nor why the Germans protect theirs. With us, it's a similar situation.

What's the difference then? We're not aliens with fluorescent green skin and trumpets for ears and noses. We're earthlings ? Europeans, in fact ? and the preservation of our language is something we care deeply about. Every language is unique, and no two are the same. The Mexican anthropologist Miguel Le?n-Portilla wrote a poem about this. It starts with these lines:

When a language dies
The divine things
stars, sun and moon
the human things
thinking and feeling
are no longer reflected
in that mirror

The poem is a little twee, granted, but the message couldn't be truer. The Catalan language is, and will be in danger. For three centuries, every single Catalan speaker has lived in a state where there's another, more dominant language spoken (Spanish or French). On top of that, history has at times tried to prohibit or marginalise Catalan.

This has led to a common conclusion for victims of abusive situations: Catalan speakers end up believing that they are to blame for their own maltreatment and humiliation.

I'm a pessimist. Even when my football team, FC Barcelona, are 4-0 up with 15 minutes to go, I still think we'll end up losing. Maybe that's why it saddens me so much to say that with every passing generation, the original syntactical structure of a language diminishes further. I know you'll say to me: "Come on, this happens with every language ? with Spanish, French, and Italian." This is true, of course. But those other languages don't carry the burden of not having their own state to defend them, nor do they have to contend with a state that systematically acts against their language.

That is why my naturally pessimistic spirit was uplifted one day when I read some words written by the great Isaac Bashevis Singer. He was asked why he continued to write in Yiddish, a language that was dying. Singer said: "Yiddish may be a dying language but it is the only language I know well. Yiddish is my mother language and a mother is never really dead." I feel more or less the same. And the longer a dying language holds out, the better.

It?s the Lifetime Movies That Got Small

Surprise, surprise: Liz and Dick, Sunday's heavily hyped Lifetime movie starring jewel-hungry, scandal-prone former child star Lindsay Lohan as jewel-hungry, scandal-prone former child star Elizabeth Taylor, is not that good. The Hollywood Reporter's Tim Goodman balked at what he suggests is incredulously contrived dialogue, such as when Grant Bowler's Dick coos to a distraught Liz, ?I will love you even if you get as fat as a hippo.? ?Seriously,? snarks Goodman, ?He says that.?

Yeah, well, seriously?the real Richard Burton said a lot of things, aloud and in his daily letters to Taylor, that were much nuttier, much more grandiose than that. If Liz and Dick is neither as fun nor as poignant as a dramatization of perhaps the greatest destined-but-doomed romance of the 20^th century could or should be, the problem is not the not-quite-human performances or the sometimes over-the-top dialogue. If anything, Liz and Dick is too tasteful, too restrained; if anything, Lohan and Bowler do too good a job of approximating real people.

The real Burton and Taylor weren't ?real? people?they lived like something between gods and space aliens, as though the rules that governed mere mortals simply did not apply to them. Taylor survived countless brushes with death and overcame debilitating addictions to booze and pills; Burton attempted to comply with repeated doctors? orders to quit drinking but could never stay dry for very long. Liz and Dick shows the couple drinking but rarely drunk, and both Burton's health problems and Taylor's Betty Ford Clinic stint are elided completely.

Liz and Dick depicts Burton and Taylor moving their blended family onto a yacht in the Mediterranean so they could avoid both the intrusion of the paparazzi and the burden of paying taxes, but it leaves out the fact that this retreat also allowed them to sit out the late 1960s blissfully unaware that the power balance, in Hollywood and in the larger American culture, had changed. They were so isolated that they had no idea how far removed from reality they had become. The couple returned to Los Angeles in 1970 for the Oscars (Burton was nominated for best actor for the stodgy Anne of a Thousand Days) to find that their type of larger-than-life stardom had become pass?; minutes after Burton lost his prize, a stunned Elizabeth presented the best picture statue to the X-rated Midnight Cowboy. ?The world has changed,? Burton wrote in his diary. ?I'm afraid that we are temporarily out in the cold, and fallen stars.?

Even the way they spoke to each other and about each other was patently, totally nuts. Liz and Dick is bookended with mentions of the letters Burton wrote to Taylor, every day for two decades, whether they were apart or not. It never quotes from these missives, perhaps because they were just too weird and often too smutty; more than one describes, as Burton put it in a note dated April 18, 1972, ?what it feels like to fuck you.?

If handwritten testament was one backbone of the Burton/Taylor relationship, jewelry was another. Liz and Dick documents the couple's historic first trip to Bulgari in Rome and occasionally returns to the subject of jewelry as an example of the couple's excessive spending and Liz's shallow extravagance. Which is to say that Liz and Dick totally misses the point of Burton and Taylor's shared jewel fetish. For her, near royalty, jewels were shining armor, tools for deflecting the gaze of onlookers from her face. For him, the Welsh son of a coal miner, there was an unmatchable thrill in being able to nestle priceless stones?symbols of his own earned wealth and status?on the hands and neck of the most beautiful woman in the world.

A great example of where the film doesn't dare go as far as reality is the way the movie depicts the end of Taylor's marriage to Eddie Fisher. In real life, as in the film, Burton really did demand that Taylor pick between him and Fisher, and she chose Burton?right in front of Fisher. In Liz and Dick, this scene marks the end of Taylor's marriage to Fisher. In real life, though, the cuckolded Fisher hung on for quite a while longer. According to Furious Love, Sam Kashner and Nancy Schoenberger's incredible book on Burton and Taylor based on their diaries and letters, Fisher called Taylor's villa days after the confrontation and Burton answered. ?What are you doing in my house?? Fisher asked. ?What do you think I'm doing?? Burton responded. ?I'm fucking your wife.?

Of course, the actual Burton/Taylor relationship is not the only ?real life? set of events that Liz and Dick references. The stunt casting of Lohan reflects a certain kind of brilliance on the part of the folks at Lifetime, who know there's enough interest in the troubled actress' "comeback" (her last screen credit was a small part in Robert Rodriguez's 2010 Machete) to fuel, if not ratings gold, then definitely Twitter trending topic gold. At one point, Lohan's Taylor gets on the phone and demands to be cast opposite Burton in The V.I.P.s: ?You pay me and fire all your PR people. You'll save money and have a huge hit!? It's a rare moment of self-awareness (though a made-up one, as producer Anatole de Grunwald actually offered Taylor a salary twice Burton?s); the movie would have benefited from more directly and more frequently plumbing the camp potential of the casting.

But Liz and Dick is a Lifetime movie, and Lifetime movies rarely allow for such intentional archness. One of the keys to the network?s highly successful formula?along with comically oppressive scores and happy endings for every harried single mom?is a complete lack of subtext or irony. It's extremely rare that anyone in a Lifetime movie ever says anything other than what they mean (unless they're blatantly lying as part of a plot device), and they certainly don't have thoughts or feelings that they don't articulate out loud. There's no room for complicated or ambiguous feelings, double meanings, or psychological implication. Even when the movies plumb real-life incidents for material, they inevitably flatten out messy pragmatics or moral shades to fit the template: Recall the Jennifer Love Hewitt vehicle The Client List, which turned an actual small-town prostitution scandal into fodder for the saucy adventures of a fictional, super-hot, struggling housewife.

I know what Lifetime movies are like because I genuinely enjoy watching them?particularly at this time of year, when the Christmas settings (never Hanukkah) add an extra layer of fairy dust to the proceedings. So I'm not surprised that there's no room in Liz and Dick for the truly wild aspects of Liz and Dick's real lives. The Lowdown:
Well I started a new on line business for my kid and decided that I would use this e commerce plugin for it due to all I had heard and seen. Wile it is pretty straight forward to setup and easy to use. I did find it missing some of the great features in WP ecommerce, I needed a couple of different options for shipping and payment that are not available without adding a plugin that cost a bit extra.

In fact as good as this plugin is most of the features that make it good are additional priced plugins

The Lowdown:
This plugin was to offer an interesting way for getting people to share you in their social networks, you set it to offer them a discount say 10% if they tweet or facebook their shopping cart. The discount was to be applied right as soon as the tweet of facebook post was made..
While this plugins was a great idea in theory, I found it to be a pain for my use, it would not layout correctly and it would not work correctly seems they have a ways to go. I will revisit it after they do an upgrade

Marcus? Take: This is a wild plugin that has a lot of cool options for replicating content from one post to be embedded in another. The thing that I found really incredible was that I could use shortcodes of other programs and embed that to another page by using this WP Advanced Include shortcode. I used it for banners and testimonials to create a post mash-up for a client.
