Larry Hanley, president of the Amalgamated Transit Union and member of the AFL-CIO's Executive Council, told HuffPost Live Thursday that President Barack Obama needs to do more to help the poor and labor class that helped him get reelected.
"I'd love to see the president of the United States, whoever he his, get out there and lead on behalf of the people in this country who really need help," Hanley told HuffPost Live host Jacob Soboroff. "Without the poor -- the army of poor in America -- he would not be in office, so we would hope he would do more."
The comments came after the president stopped in Michigan on Monday to speak out against recently passed "Right to Work" legislation in that state, which unions say will be damaging to organized labor and workers.
"We should do everything we can to keep creating good middle-class jobs that help folks rebuild security for their families," Obama said during a speech at the Daimler Detroit Diesel plant.
"The so-called 'right-to-work' laws -- they don't have to do with economics, they have everything to do with politics. What they're really talking about is giving you the right to work for less money," he added.
Hanley's comments came during a HuffPost Live discussion centered around Michigan's new "Right to Work" law. Watch the Full Segment on HuffPost Live.
