Honda Teases a Fit-Based Crossover

Ahead of next month's North American International Auto Show in Detroit, Honda today released a teaser image of an "Urban SUV concept."

Although the photo reveals only the car's roof, belt, and shoulder lines, there's a good chance that we're looking at the upcoming SUV variant of the Fit. Rumors of the vehicle were already circulating: Just last week Automotive News reported that Honda will build three vehicles with the Fit platform: a compact, sedan dubbed the "City", and this Fit-based crossover.

Powering this new Fit offshoot will most likely be Honda's mouthful of a new hybrid system, the Sport Hybrid Intelligent Dual Clutch Drive system (i-DCD)?a replacement for the aging Integrated Motor Assist. The pint-sized crossover will carry a 1.4-liter inline-four Atkinson cycle engine and an electric motor mated to a seven-speed dual clutch transmission. Honda hopes that the i-DCD system, in addition to injecting some sportiness, will improve efficiency over the old system by up to 30 percent. The vehicle will use the torquey electric motor to get the car up to speed and then engage the gas engine at cruise speeds to save the batteries.

While Honda is billing this Fit-based compact SUV as a concept, the Japanese automaker's track record would suggest that the car it reveals in Detroit will look virtually the same as the car that ends up at a dealership near you. Just take a look at the 2013 Crosstour.
