(AP) ? Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu won pledges Wednesday from France's president to push harder for new sanctions against Iran to keep it from developing nuclear weapons ? but no sympathy for any possible Israeli military strike against Iran.

In a visit to Paris, Netanyahu praised French pressure on Iran and called for "even tougher sanctions" than the ones currently in place.

"The sanctions are taking a bite out of Iran's economy ... unfortunately they have not stopped the Iranian program," he said.

Israel has been an outspoken critic of Iran's disputed nuclear program, repeatedly saying that Tehran is well on the way to developing an atomic bomb. Israel believes a nuclear-armed Iran would pose a threat to its very existence, citing Iranian leaders' frequent calls for destruction of the Jewish state, Iran's development of long-range missiles and Iranian support for Arab militant groups.

"Given the history of the Jewish people, I would not sit by and write off a threat by those who say they are going to annihilate us," Netanyahu told reporters. He said Arab nations, too, would be "relieved" if Iran were militarily prevented from obtaining nuclear arms.

Tehran has long insisted it is not developing atomic weapons. But French President Francois Hollande said Wednesday that Iran has not proven that its nuclear program is aimed only at civilian use.

Hollande has supported a push for tougher European Union sanctions on Iran, but he also wants to keep the door open to dialogue, and has opposed Netanyahu's talk of possible military action.

"It's a threat that cannot be accepted by France," Hollande said at Netanyahu's side, warning that a nuclear-armed Iran would be a danger to the region and the world.

France, Hollande said, "is ready to vote for other sanctions, as many as necessary."

"We must make sure that through pressure, sanctions and later through negotiations, Iran renounces its intention to have access to nuclear weapons. I am working in that spirit," he said.

Israel has repeatedly threatened to attack Iran if it concludes that international sanctions and diplomacy are failing to halt the nuclear program. In a speech to the United Nations in September, Netanyahu suggested that the world had until next summer at the latest to act or it would be too late to prevent the Iranians from making a bomb.

In his comments Wednesday, Netanyahu said he hopes the issue will be resolved peacefully.

Netanyahu and Hollande also talked about the possibility of resuming Israeli-Palestinian peace negotiations in Paris.

"President Hollande can invite (Palestinian President Mahmoud) Abbas to the Elysee," the French presidential palace, Netanyahu said. "I'm here, I'm ready. ... The only way we can complete the negotiations is to begin them."

Hollande responded: "That's a good idea."

The two leaders disagreed, however, about other issues.

France has long opposed Jewish settlement building in the Israeli-occupied West Bank and east Jerusalem, and supports the creation of a Palestinian state. Netanyahu says he also supports the idea of Palestinian independence, but he has added so many conditions that the Palestinians do not take his offers seriously.

France also voted for Palestinian membership in UNESCO, the Paris-based U.N. cultural and educational body, a year ago. The Palestinian president is now moving forward with his plan to seek upgraded observer status at the U.N. in New York next month, despite American and Israeli threats of financial or diplomatic retaliation.

Netanyahu criticized Palestinian efforts toward international recognition before a peace deal is reached, saying that "going to the U.N. with unilateral declarations is not negotiations. It's the opposite of negotiations."

Netanyahu's visit is the first to France under Hollande, a Socialist seen as somewhat less Israel-friendly than his conservative predecessor Nicolas Sarkozy.

It's also Netanyahu's first visit since a radical Islamist gunman killed a rabbi and three Jewish schoolchildren in southern France in March, this country's worst terrorist attack and worst anti-Semitic attack in years.

Netanyahu travels Thursday to Toulouse to pay homage to the victims.

Netanyahu's visit was marked by demonstrations by both pro-Palestinian and pro-Israel activists. At one protest in front of Paris' Opera Garnier, about 200 supporters of the Palestinian cause waved banners and distributed leaflets calling for a boycott of Israel.

Youssef Berbero, a protester, called Netanyahu's visit "an insult to democracy and to the Palestinian people being massacred."

89% Frankenweenie

Question: Have you noticed the past few Tim Burton films are missing that quintessential essence we have grown to love over the last few decades? I can't quite put my finger as to why or what's gone awry, but I really haven't enjoyed his last few films until Frankenweenie! Yep, I saw this one and felt Tim Burton finally got back to his roots. Actually, I found out, after the fact, that this is a remake of a short film Burton did in 1984. Coincidence? Maybe. Perhaps I was able to connect to the story line in Burton's latest stop motion film. I am a huge dog lover and have unfortunately lost a couple of pets throughout my life. Actually my first dog, Auggie, died similarly to Sparky in Frankenweenie. Being the same age as Victor, I could feel his extreme pain over the loss of his best friend. Now I did not try to revive Auggie like Frankenstein's monster, but I completely empathized with the boy trying to fill the void by any means possible. This film is actually listed as horror (plus comedy and animation), and I will say for young children it would be wise for parents to heed that genre listing. Yes, it is rated PG, but for those young children who might scare easily this story is a bit on the dark side and quite intense at times. In fact, a girl and her father left during the film never to return. I noticed the stuffed animal in her hands and she was holding on to it for dear life as she briskly walked out of the theatre. My guess she was about 8 years-old. Now, my nearly 11-year old daughter had no qualms or fear of the story line and was delighted with the entire film. For the parents who see this film I imagine you will revel in some nostalgic memories that Frankenweenie will evoke. I don't want to give away too much but one character in this movie was based on and looks nearly identical to another character from one of the stop motion films from our youth. I will let you figure out which one. Also, there are others who were obviously based on classic horror film characters. I counted at least three but have a feeling there might be more. And I would probably know if their more if I knew a lot more about horror films, but sadly, I was not unlike the little 8 year-old who skedaddled out of the theatre when I was her age. All-in-all, Frankenweenie is the classic Frankenstein tale, no pun intended, so it won't win any originality awards, but there was a good message about loss, science and trying to obtain things for the wrong reasons. A good message for the youngsters out there - and perhaps for a few adults as well. My favorite part: The one character that reminded me of another character from my youth. My least favorite: That it reminded me of the loss of my first dog. Directed (original story) by Tim Burton, Walt Disney Pictures, 2012 Screenplay: Leonard Ripps, John August and Tim Burton. Starring: Martin Short, Catherine O'Hara, Winona Ryder and Martin Landau. Genre: Animation, Comedy, Horror and Sci-fi. Length: 87 minutes Rating: PG Review: 7 out of 10

Autoresponder Messages That Get Your E-Mails Opened

Your email list is just another tool in the marketers? toolbox ? and like all tools, nothing happens unless you use it. It?s important to load your autoresponder with emails and send them at regular intervals.

If you?ve ever subscribed to an email list and then didn?t get any communication from that party until six months later, then you know how difficult it is to remember what you even signed up for to begin with.

By not going after immediate contact and then maintaining it, the list owner lost a substantial chance to sell you any of his or her products. Since research shows that it takes multiple emails before most subscribers will act, you want to begin building a relationship with new subscribers as soon as possible. For a marketer, this is what it means by not allowing any grass to grow under your feet.

One way to connect and then stay in contact with your list is to load your autoresponder up with helpful emails. Offer something, and create a desire for them to know more. You achieve this by making sure your email pulls at the reader?s curiosity.

You offer your words like small previews of something bigger and more delicious so that the reader feels compelled to click on the link in the email and follow it to your website. But remember that follow up is where you don?t want to drop the ball.

Set your autoresponder to generate an email to all new subscribers who opt in within twenty four hours of their subscription. The longer you wait to send that first email, the higher the odds your subscribers won?t remember who your company is, or what your online business does.

This initial contact email can be as simple as welcoming the subscriber and stating when to expect the next email in a series of lessons. You may want this first email to be breezy and personal, but have a good mix after that.

With follow up emails after your initial welcome, you can also direct new subscribers to recent posts from your blog, or popular products on your website allowing you to further promote your business to subscribers.

Create a balance of selling to them versus being helpful.? Send out a series of lessons.? Ask them to participate in a poll so that it becomes interactive.? Be a little controversial, but not offensive.

You?ll want to set up a series of emails to send to new subscribers on a regular basis. Moderation is key. Don?t overdo it by bombarding new list subscribers with email messages every day.? Instead, contact subscribers within a couple of days after the initial contact to remind them of who you are and all the great things you have to offer them.? Remember, it takes 5-7 interactions before someone will consider making a purchase.? Your autoresponder is an important tool in the ?know/like/trust? process for your social media marketing.

New Yorkers try for normalcy as Sandy approaches

NEW YORK (AP) ? Defiant New Yorkers jogged, pushed strollers and took snapshots of churning New York Harbor Monday, trying to salvage normal routines in a city with no trains, schools and an approaching mammoth storm.

"The worst is still coming," warned Gov. Andrew Cuomo as officials shut tunnels, Broadway, mass transit and the stock exchange, saying Hurricane Sandy's storm surge could inundate downtown with up to 11 feet of water. Hundreds of thousands of New Yorkers living on the waterfront or low-lying areas were ordered to leave.

On New York's Long Island, floodwaters had begun to deluge some low-lying towns and more than 100,000 customers had lost power. And high winds picked up during the day in the city, apparently tipping over a construction crane at a 65-story condominium under construction in midtown Manhattan. Waters swelled over esplanades at the southern tip of Manhattan and parts of a highway that snakes along Manhattan's East Side was flooded. About 16,000 New Yorkers lost power, mostly in the boroughs of Queens and Staten Island.

Despite the dire forecasts, many chose to embrace what was coming.

Doorman Ozzie Pomales showed up at work at his lower Manhattan high-rise with binoculars around his neck. "I really wanted to see some big waves," he said.

Mark Vial pushed a stroller holding his 2-year-old daughter Maziyar toward his apartment building in Battery Park City, an area that was ordered evacuated. Gov Go

"We're high up enough, so I'm not worried about flooding," said Via, 35. "There's plenty of food. We'll be ok."

Nearby, Keith Reilly climbed up on a rail next to the rising waters of New York Harbor so his friend Eli Rowe could snap a photo of him in an Irish soccer jersey with the Statue of Liberty in the background.

"This is not so bad right now," said the 25-year-old Reilly. "We'll see later."

The worst of the storm, a combination of Sandy, a wintry system from the West and cold air streaming from the Arctic, was expected to hit the city under a full moon at about 8 p.m. Surging waters of between 6 and 11 feet could flood subway tunnels, knocking out the underground network of power, phone and high-speed Internet lines that are the lifeblood of America's financial capital.

It marked the second time in 14 months that New York City has faced a scenario forecasters have long feared: a big hurricane hitting the city or a bit south, with counterclockwise winds driving water into miles of densely populated shoreline.

Mayor Michael Bloomberg urged more of the 375,000 people in the city's evacuation zone to get out earlier Monday, saying the weather would soon get too bad to leave. He closed schools for a second day on Tuesday. The U.N. and the 9/11 memorial were also closed.

"Leave immediately. ... The window for you getting out safely is closing," he said.

Joshua Segal, who lives in a 10-story Battery Park City building, stayed, chatting with neighbors outside his building Monday afternoon. He said at least half of his neighbors decided not to leave, even though the superintendent turned off the elevator.

He said he can understand why people with health concerns might want to evacuate but "if you're in good health and you're just going to stay and read a book by candlelight ? I'm OK."

Without most stores and museums open, tourists were left to snap photos of the World Trade Center site, Wall Street and Times Square in largely deserted streets.

Belgian tourist Gerd Van don Mooter-Dedecker, 56, wandered in to Trinity Church after learning that a planned shopping spree with her husband Monday wouldn't happen. "We brought empty suitcases so we could fill them up," she said.

She was scheduled to fly home Tuesday but now hopes the foul weather will add to their vacation. The weather didn't worry her. "We're use

And New Yorkers Andrew Rotz and Alex Grvymala, two young investment bankers on the Battery, wearing shorts and t-shirts, were jogging all over Lower Manhattan. Rotz said they wanted to blow off some energy before the storm hit.

"It's seems like this one's for real," Grvymala said of the coming storm.

Long Island felt the brunt of the storm first, covering famed Jones Beach in water by early Monday and flooding towns like Riverhead and Montauk on the Hamptons. ??

Sean Seal piled dirt and sandbags onto the alleyway behind his collectibles store in the fishing village of Greenport, where the water was steadily creeping up the street toward his front door. He only opened the shop about two months ago.

"We put everything up. Up on tables, up on shelves, as far as we could," he said. "It's gonna be devastating. We'll lose a lot of stuff. It's not gonna be good."

People were shopping for last-minute supplies in Bayville, located directly on Long Island Sound near Oyster Bay, as the sound splashed over a seawall on the only road that leads in and out of the town. Judy Sniffen returned from taking her husband for dialysis on Monday morning.

"I'm taking it very seriously; this storm is very serious to me," she said. "That Sound looks very angry."

Geaux Teacher ? Useful Guidance For Making Sure You ...

Homeschooling can seem difficult. It really is not that hard. You can do it and give your kids a great education. If you continue to teach your kids from your home you will be assured that they are learning what you want them to learn. Use the advice presented here to get started with homeschooling.

Any child can be catered to when they?re in a homeschool. If the child is hands on, then make your lesson plans focus on a hands on approach. These extra touches will contribute greatly to your child?s success.

Before you make the decision to home school, evaluate whether you have the necessary qualifications to teach them effectively. Realistically evaluate your abilities as your child?s teacher so you are prepared for the parts where you need help.

Take a trip to the library in your area. Reading is a vital skill to teach as part of any type of curriculum. No child is able to get better at reading if they do not read. Your local library has a much wider selection of materials available. Go there to browse books for entertainment, but focus on the materials needed for school. Incorporate books into teaching reading and writing to your child.

Plan out your meals ahead of time. Once you start homeschooling, your weekly life will be very hectic. You may have a limited time available to prepare dinner each night. You might end up eating dinner at fast food places on a few occasions. Get ahead of the game by preparing meals in advance on the weekends and freezing them. Enlist you children?s help in meal preparation. There are many valuable lessons to be learned in the kitchen. Now you will just have to defrost and heat the meal up when it?s time for dinner.

Utilize any moments, such as a vacation with the family as a learning experience. Include museums, science centers, zoos and historical sites in your trip plans. It is easy to incorporate learning into a day or two of your trip. This can optimize your experience when you are homeschooling.

You should involve yourself with other families in your local community that homeschool their children. It can be difficult to homeschool and you are likely going to benefit from learning from others going through the same thing. It is also a great way to form friendships with people who understand what you are experiencing. You can form groups to expand your child?s social circle. After all, children will have a more difficult time making friends since they are not in a classroom filled with kids five days a week. Meeting with other families makes this easier.

Make sure that craft supplies are always within reach for your children. You can give one child the opportunity to independently create art while you work with the other. Give the child free rein to create and explore the craft items. This will help him learn, as well.

Is there a homeschooling association near you? This can be a good way to get new tips, swap supplies and escape the house for a while. If you get with other home schooling families you can trade supplies, books, etc. and save some money.

Now that you?ve learned what you need to know about homeschooling, you should be able to put your plans into action. Giving your children the advantage of a teacher who cares specifically about him or her, is one of the best gifts you can give them. Apply the advice from this article to make homeschooling the best experience possible. After all, would you really want them to have anything less than the best?

Russian punk band "risk lives" in Soviet-style prisons

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Two women from punk band Pussy Riot sentenced to jail for an anti-Putin protest in a Moscow cathedral face harsh, Soviet-style prison camps where their lives may be in danger due to a lack of medicine and no hot water amid sub-zero winter temperatures, according to a recently released band member.

Pussy Riot's protest has attracted global attention because of the two-year jail sentences meted out to its members for what prosecutors called "hooliganism motivated by religious hatred".

Opposition figures say the punishments formed part of a wave of repression against opponents of President Vladimir Putin, now in his 13th year ruling Russia.

Putin said last Thursday that the women "deserved what they got" because their punk prayer in Moscow's main cathedral last February, during which the balaclava-clad women appealed to the Virgin Mary to get rid of the president, amounted to "group sex" and threatened the moral foundations of Russia.

Yekaterina Samutsevich, the third member of Pussy Riot who was released from jail earlier this month after her sentence was suspended on appeal, spoke to Reuters in an interview about the prison camp in Mordovia, about 300 miles southeast of Moscow where her colleague Nadezhda Tolokonnikova has been sent to serve her sentence.

She said its conditions recalled the Soviet era.

"There is no hot water in Mordovia and there are only special prison clothes given out which are very cold for the weather," said Samutsevich.

"THEY CAN DIE"

"There is no medicine. In Soviet times they thought that if people fell ill, that was their own problem ... if someone gets sick and nobody helps them, they can die - unfortunately there have been such cases and they happen periodically."

The other jailed group member, Maria Alyokhina, is bound for a prison camp in the Urals city of Perm, a location used to jail political prisoners in the Soviet era. She has not yet arrived.

Samutsevich, a small, intense 30-year-old who has worked as a computer programmer, gave the interview in a small McDonald's in a town just outside Moscow because of concerns about her security.

The first part of the interview was filmed and took place outside in a howling cold wind because the restaurant would not allow TV cameras inside.

Samutsevich predicted that Putin's government would in the end fall victim to mass unrest and said the clampdown on dissent now under way in Russia showed just how scared the Kremlin was.

"The system itself is crumbling," she said. "It's becoming more repressive ... those in power have very strong fears and their behaviour is more and more wild. We could end with a total collapse like the Soviet Union."

Putin is now starting a fresh six-year term, having won a presidential election in March with 63.6 percent of the vote. Opponents said the Kremlin's dominance over mass media, obstacles placed in the way of the opposition, ballot-stuffing and the extensive use of government resources to garner support for Putin meant the vote was not free or fair.

Samutsevich said Pussy Riot's top priority now was to campaign to free the band's two imprisoned members and it would call on other members for help.

"The band doesn't consist just of the three of us," she said. "There's more, way more people, around 20 members in the band."

Putin, she said, was trying to present the sentences against the band members as "some kind of ordinary court case for an ordinary criminal charge. But this is totally wrong and he is not succeeding".

POPULAR HOSTILITY

Polls have shown that in Russia's predominantly conservative society, where Orthodox Christian believers are a majority, most citizens approve of the jail terms for Pussy Riot and dislike their actions. More than 40 percent in a recent poll said the women's prison terms should have been longer.

Asked about popular hostility to the band, Samutsevich said the Kremlin had used its control of state television channels to present a distorted picture of Pussy Riot.

This obscured the band's real purpose and its political protest message. Instead, official media emphasised constantly that the group were anti-religious blasphemers.

Viewers, she said, "didn't see us, they didn't hear us because the federal TV channels have done their best to cut out our speech. They would cut all the episodes from the video (of Pussy Riot performing in the cathedral) where you could hear the lyrics of the songs. And when people hear the lyrics, they immediately understand the purpose of our action."

Opposition figures have pointed to the irony of Putin, a former KGB spy, speaking solemnly of the sanctity of religion in a country where, for decades, the Soviet Communist Party - which the Kremlin chief served for decades in his KGB role - repressed all forms of religious expression.

Pussy Riot's protest song began with the phrase "Virgin Mary, Mother of God, banish Putin, Virgin Mary, Mother of God, banish him, we pray thee".

Being a sports fan and a practician has been one of the reason to bring the arguments for why is good to wear a helmet when skiing or snowboarding. Even though it is said that wearing a helmet can make you take more risk on the ski path, however you should also consider that the same behaviour can occur even though you are not wearing it, so is a similar proportion of risks that is associated with individual or cultural differences in which case you should consider your body needs and natural limitations that this sport cannot necessary make you invincible.

USDA Blog ? Secretary's Column: Expanding Rural Broadband ...

As the drought continues, USDA and other Federal agencies are doing all we can to help farmers, ranchers and communities. Unfortunately, USDA?s tools are limited today. Due to inaction by Congress, many programs authorized under the 2008 Farm Bill expired on October 1. Other aspects of the law will continue to expire in the coming months.

This brings tremendous uncertainty for rural families ? particularly livestock producers who have lost access to disaster programs, and dairy producers who no longer have access to dairy support programs.

As we encourage Congress to pass a multi-year Food, Farm and Jobs Bill as soon as possible, USDA continues our work to strengthen the rural economy.? This includes continuing our record efforts to expand access to broadband internet in rural areas.

Since 2009, USDA has invested in critical infrastructure to deliver faster internet to nearly 7 million rural Americans ? expanding opportunity and improving quality of life for rural residents.? This includes bringing service to dozens of isolated, limited-income communities through USDA?s ?Community Connect? initiative.

Our efforts have also extended broadband internet to more than 360,000 rural businesses. The fact is, today?s small businesses are competing in a fast-moving global economy and a great deal of business is conducted online. If a rural community or small town lacks access to modern, high-speed internet, rural businesses are faced with a significant disadvantage. USDA?s record investments in broadband infrastructure are ensuring that these businesses can compete, grow, and create more jobs.

USDA has complemented these efforts by providing more than 5,700 loans and grants for distance learning and telemedicine projects. Today, distance learning initiatives are helping deliver online education in rural areas, expanding opportunity for our young people. And for rural Americans who don?t have a doctor nearby or who need specialized advice, telemedicine projects are connecting physicians in our cities with patients in our small towns.

Ultimately, broadband internet is a critical factor in expanding opportunity and growing the rural economy. ?Folks who call rural America home should be able to enjoy the same opportunity as Americans in our cities. Faster internet isn?t just more convenient ? it opens new doors for businesses, grows opportunity and improves quality of life. I?m proud of our work ? and even in a time of uncertainty, we will continue doing all we can to strengthen rural communities.

Ex-head of military team in Libya: security weak - 8 News NOW

By LARRY MARGASAK and MATTHEW LEE
Associated Press

WASHINGTON (AP) - Four weeks before the election, Republicans used a politically charged House hearing to confront State Department officials about security at the U.S. Consulate in Libya and assail the Obama administration's early response to the killing of the ambassador and three other Americans there.

GOP lawmakers refused to accept the department's explanation Wednesday that protection judged adequate for the threat was overwhelmed by an unprecedented assault in Benghazi on the 11th anniversary of the Sept. 11 terror attacks.

They also rejected Undersecretary of State Patrick Kennedy's explanation that officials were relying on the best intelligence available in characterizing the attack afterward as stemming from a protest over an anti-Islam Internet video rather than a deliberate, planned act of terrorism.

A top State official acknowledged she had declined to approve more U.S. security as violence in Benghazi spiked, saying the department wanted to train Libyans to protect the consulate.

"I made the best decisions I could with the information I had," said Charlene R. Lamb, a deputy assistant secretary for diplomatic security.

Regardless of allegations of blame, there is no dispute over the tragic result. U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens and three other Americans - including two former Navy SEALs - were killed in what administration officials now describe as an act of terrorism.

In statements immediately after the attack, neither President Barack Obama nor Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton mentioned terrorism. And both gave credence to the notion that the attack was related to protests about the privately made anti-Islam video.

"Some have sought to justify this vicious behavior as a response to inflammatory material posted on the Internet," Clinton said on the night of the attack. "The United States deplores any intentional effort to denigrate the religious beliefs of others. Our commitment to religious tolerance goes back to the very beginning of our nation. But let me be clear: There is never any justification for violent acts of this kind."

Five days later, U.N. Ambassador Susan Rice said her best information at the time was that the attack stemmed from a protest that became violent.

President Barack Obama, asked on ABC about the changing accounts of what instigated the attack, said the information was evolving.

"As information came in, information was put out, the information may not have always been right the first time," he said. "These are people I know, and if there is something to be fixed, it will get fixed."

White House spokesman Jay Carney told reporters Wednesday that in hindsight "there is no question that the security was not enough to prevent that tragedy from happening. There were four Americans killed."

Democrats on the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee tried to blame Republicans for cutting more than $300 million in diplomatic security funds worldwide.

"The fact is that, since 2011, the House has cut embassy security by hundreds of millions of dollars below the amounts requested by the president," said Maryland Rep. Elijah Cummings, the committee's senior Democrat.

Lamb, the official in charge of protecting U.S. embassies and consulates, told the committee, "We had the correct number of assets in Benghazi at the time of 9/11."

Rep. Dan Burton, R-Ind., asked Lamb if she turned down requests for more security in Benghazi.

"Yes sir, I said personally I would not support it," she replied. "We were training local Libyans and army men" to provide security, a policy in force at U.S. diplomatic facilities around the world.

Committee Chairman Darrell Issa, R-Calif., retorted there was "as much as 30 percent turnover in the people you were training."

Eric Nordstrom, who was the top security official in Libya earlier this year, testified he was criticized for seeking more security. "There was no plan and it was hoped it would get better," he said.

Nordstrom told the committee that conversations he had with people in Washington led him to believe that it was "abundantly clear we were not going to get resources until the aftermath of an incident. How thin does the ice have to get before someone falls through?"

He said he was so exasperated at one point he told a colleague that "for me the Taliban is on the inside of the building."

Lt. Col. Andrew Wood, who headed a 16-member military force in Libya, disputed State Department officials who said the special operations troops were replaced by people with the same skill sets.

The skills of his troops were "way above the skill level of local (forces) armed with a pistol," Wood said, adding he was he was frustrated that pleas for more security were not met.

"We were fighting a losing battle, we weren't even allowed to keep what we had," he testified.

Nordstrom acknowledged in response to a question from Rep. Jason Chaffetz, R-Utah, that while the State Department was refusing more security, his and others' pay was increased because he was serving in such a dangerous area.

Kennedy defended Rice for her comments indicating the attack was a protest gone awry.

"If any administration official, including any career official, were on television on Sunday, Sept. 16, they would have said what Ambassador Rice said," he said. "The information she had at that point from the intelligence community is the same that I had at that point. As time went on, additional information became available. Clearly, we know more today than we did on the Sunday after the attack."

Kennedy, a four-decade veteran of the Foreign Service, said the department uses the best information from people on the ground at diplomatic posts around the world as well as experts in Washington in assessing risk and allocating security resources.

"The assault that occurred on the evening of Sept. 11, however, was an unprecedented attack by dozens of heavily armed men," he said.

Meanwhile, Obama's chief counterterrorism adviser, John Brennan, met Wednesday with Libyan President Mohamed Magariaf and other officials in Tripoli on ways Libya can better help the U.S. track down those responsible for the deaths at the consulate.

(AP) ? Sam Bradford missed high, low, left, right.

After capping the St. Louis Rams' opening drive with a touchdown pass to Lance Kendricks, the former No. 1 overall pick endured an 0-for-12 slump that included Patrick Peterson's interception in the end zone on a pass tossed up for grabs under heavy pressure.

No worries. The Rams' rapidly-improving defense saw to that.

"Those guys played outstanding," Bradford said after the Rams knocked off the previously unbeaten Arizona Cardinals 17-3 on Thursday night. "They've played great all year and they have kept us in a lot of games."

Bradford busted out of his funk with a 52-yard touchdown pass to rookie Chris Givens for a two-TD cushion and Robert Quinn had three of the Rams' nine sacks on Kevin Kolb to keep the Cardinals in check.

The Rams have three first-round picks on the defensive line and the fourth, tackle Kendall Langford, was a key free-agent pickup.

"We believe in ourselves," Quinn said. "We believe we can be one of the great defenses. When there was a play to be made, we made it."

Arizona (4-1) scored at least 20 points in each of its first four games, but had no luck containing a pass rush that had totaled just six sacks on the year, and got stopped twice inside the 20 in the final minutes. The Rams also had a strong defensive game last week in a 19-13 victory over Seattle, also at home.

Kolb got his helmet knocked off twice on hits, once after getting popped in the jaw. He described the Cardinals' first-half woes as "sickening."

"I'm all right," Kolb said. "I'm glad we've got the weekend to heal up, mentally and physically."

The Rams also limited the Cardinals to 45 yards rushing on 17 carries.

"Bottom line, they decided they wanted to throw the ball a lot and that made it kind of a track meet," Rams defensive end Chris Long said. "We've been waiting a long time to feel like we've done our job on defense."

Kendricks caught a 7-yard TD pass in the first quarter and Greg Zuerlein kicked a 53-yard field goal in the second quarter for the Rams (3-2), who are 3-0 at home and ended Arizona's seven-game winning streak in St. Louis ? the Cardinals' home before leaving for the desert in 1988.

"I didn't like anything," coach Ken Whisenhunt said. "The thing I respected is our guys didn't quit, and even as bad as it went we had a chance at the end of the game."

The Rams totaled two victories last year but so far have executed a quick turnaround under new coach Jeff Fisher. They're 3-0 at home for the first time since 2003, when they were unbeaten in the Edward Jones Dome and they're above .500 for the first time since they were 4-3 on Nov. 4, 2006.

"I've never been there before," Long said. "I'm unfamiliar with the sound of it, but I'm liking it."

Bradford finished 7 for 21 for 141 yards, the second-lowest total of his career. He threw for 126 yards against Tampa Bay his rookie year in 2010.

Before the second TD pass, he had been 3 for 16 overall for just 25 yards, often missing on his receivers by a lot. Undoubtedly, he missed Danny Amendola, sidelined in the second quarter with a right shoulder injury on a diving attempt that was initially ruled a 22-yard catch for a first down but overturned after the Cardinals challenged.

Amendola perhaps hinted at the extent of the injury when he flung his helmet, with his left hand, while walking in a tunnel to get X-Rays. He had the arm in a sling after the game, but the Rams did not make him available to reporters.

The Rams, ranked 27th in offense, came out throwing, with Bradford completing passes of 14 yards to Brandon Gibson and 44 yards to Amendola on the first two plays, setting up the score to Kendricks on third down. It was the first offensive touchdown in three games for St. Louis.

Arizona responded with a drive that lasted 9:24, ending with Jay Feely's 35-yard field goal. The Cardinals kept the drive alive with three third-down conversions. Larry Fitzgerald's 5-yard catch on the first play of the drive marked the 122nd straight game with a catch, a franchise record.

Zuerlein, a sixth-round draft pick out of Missouri Western, made it 10-3 early in the second quarter. He is 13 for 13 this season, including four kicks of 50-plus yards.

Feely missed a 40-yard field goal late in the second quarter.

Bradford was 3 for 4 for 65 yards on the opening drive before cooling off. St. Louis was well within Zuerlein's range at the Arizona 16 late in the third quarter when a pass was intercepted by Peterson in the back of the end zone.

Arizona's loss leaves Atlanta and Houston as the only remaining unbeaten teams. The Cardinals were still the St. Louis Cardinals the last time they were 4-0, in 1974. Known as the "Big Red," those Cardinals won their first seven that season en route to a 10-4 record, before losing in the first round of the playoffs to Minnesota.

The loss was only the Cardinals' third in 14 games since starting the 2011 season 1-6.

NOTES: Fitzgerald broke the mark set by Mel Gray from 1973-82 and finished with eight catches for 92 yards, leaving him 48 yards shy of 10,000 for his career. ... Kurt Warner, who took the Rams to two Super Bowls and the Cardinals to one, got a huge sustained ovation when he was introduced in the first quarter. Warner and another former Rams great, Marshall Faulk, are on the NFL Network broadcast team. ... Rams S Quintin Mikell and Cardinals backup LB Reggie Walter were sidelined by blows to the head.
