London review: Mexican restaurant Chipotle in the West End - TNT ...

There?s a new sheriff in town, galloping in to take over the lucrative burrito market as Londoners embrace the handheld Mexican classic that?s rapidly gained popularity with office lunchers in recent years.

The scene Chipotle?s already got five branches in London, although that?s small tacos compared with 1300 restaurants in the US.

The interior of the St Martin?s Lane branch (situated a stone?s throw from Leicester Square) is minimalist, with bar stools against a large metal tables, as well as a small basement with individual tables and chairs.

The grub The chain aims to shake up the fast food market with an ethical twist that would make the likes of Jamie and Hugh very happy indeed.

Commendably, all of the meat used at Chipotle is either free-range, farm assured or from RSPCA-approved Freedom Foods farms.

But besides the animal welfare angle and marketing, is the grub any good? Yes, it is: mouth-watering Barbacoa shredded beef, black beans cooked with bacon, and some seriously tasty brown rice mixed with citrus juices and coriander make a wonderful treat.

You can have your burrito in a tortilla or in a bowl and there?s a vegetarian option (which should really be priced a little lower), chicken and steak chunks prepared and cooked in an Mexican chipotle chilli adobo (marinade) and tasty Carnitas shredded pork.

Behind the bar A small selection of bottled beers, and fizzy drinks - and there?s the option to have a Margarita if you?re feeling saucy.

Bill please
Burritos from ?6.70. Soda cans ?1.15; Margarita ?4.35; bottled beers ?3.65; juice ?2.

Verdict
Others might claim gourmet but these guys have it all wrapped up.
