Fort Ticonderoga's Chocolate Covered History Symposium | The ...

A weekend-long celebration of chocolate, wine, and spirits, will be held October 12-13 at Fort Ticonderoga?s ?Chocolate Covered History? Symposium. Participants will have the opportunity to learn about the origins of chocolate and its role in the 18th century military history of Fort Ticonderoga.

The weekend event combines wines, spirits, chocolate, and history and includes a Veuve Clicquot Champagne and dessert reception, full day symposium, and gala dinner. Breakout sessions will provide opportunities to taste various foods prepared using American Heritage Chocolate, an authentic colonial chocolate recipe made only from ingredients available in the 18th century, made by Mars Chocolate.

Following a Friday evening champagne-dessert reception at The Sagamore Resort, October 12, the symposium will begin on Saturday, October 13, at Fort Ticonderoga with Chocolate in the Americas: Connecting History from the Amazon to New England presented by Rodney Snyder, Chocolate History Research, Director for Mars Chocolate, NA, Mars Incorporated. Christopher Fox, Curator of Collections at Fort Ticonderoga, will present the second session entitled Breakfasting on Chocolate: Chocolate in the Military During the French & Indian War and American Revolution. Afternoon breakout sessions include Wine and Chocolate: Perfect Pairing led by Janine Stowell of Banfi Vintners; Baking with American Heritage Chocolate with Chef Gail Sokol; Tuthilltown Spirits Whiskey Seminar with Ralph Erenzo, Co-Founder of Tuthilltown Spirits; and A Revolution in Chocolate: 18th-Century Energy Drink, led by Fort Ticonderoga?s Director of Interpretation, Stuart Lilie.

?Chocolate Covered History? will be topped off with a Saturday evening gala at The Sagamore Resort and will include a cocktail reception and four course meal integrating chocolate into every recipe. Guests will have a once in a life-time opportunity to enjoy dishes such as Native Corn Stew paired with Chocolate Dusted Pine Island Oysters; Preserved Ducking, Pickled Fall Vegetables, Dandelion Greens with Chocolate Huckleberry Conserve; and Lavender and Knotweed Honey Marinated Lamb Chops with Roasted Rutabaga Mash and Chocolate Sassafras Sauce. Rum Spiked Chocolate Cake with Bergamot Tea Infused Pumpkin Custard and Mulled Cider Glaze will complete the meal. Each dish will be paired with appropriate wines.

Monies raised through the ?Chocolate Covered History? symposium and gala will support Fort Ticonderoga?s educational and interpretive programs. Fort Ticonderoga is a not-for-profit historic site and museum whose mission is to ensure that present and future generations learn from the struggles, sacrifices, and victories that shaped the nations of North America and changed world history.

World largest oil trader flouts Iran sanctions

Denis Balibouse / Reuters

A sign is pictured in front of Vitol Group trading commodities company building in Geneva in this October 4, 2011 file photo.

SINGAPORE/BEIJING?- Vitol, the world's largest oil trader, is buying and selling Iranian fuel oil, undermining Western efforts to choke the flow of petrodollars to Tehran and put pressure on Iran's suspected nuclear weapons program.

Vitol last month bought 2 million barrels of fuel oil, used for power generation, from Iran and offered it to Chinese traders, Reuters established in interviews with 10 oil trading, industry and shipping sources in Southeast Asia, China and the Middle East. A spokesman for Vitol declined to comment.

Swiss-based Vitol is not obliged to comply with a ban imposed in July by the European Union on trading oil with Iran because Switzerland decided not to match EU and U.S. sanctions against Tehran.

The company earlier in the year stopped trading Iranian crude oil from its main European offices before the July 1 EU embargo deadline. But the trading sources said it has continued to deal in Iranian fuel oil from the Middle East.

The tale of the cargo of Iranian fuel oil involves tanker tracking systems being switched off, two ship-to-ship transfers, and blending of the oil with fuel from another source to alter the cargo's physical specification.

Privately-held Vitol SA is led by its long-time CEO Ian Taylor, a Briton. Taylor was among leading donors to Britain's ruling Conservative Party named in March by the Prime Minister's office as having dined with David Cameron at his private apartment in Downing Street amid the fall-out from a "cash for access" party funding scandal. Britain is a vociferous critic of Tehran's nuclear program and a leading advocate of the EU sanctions.

Swiss loophole
Vitol has said previously it is in compliance with sanctions against Iran, but has declined to say whether or not it would follow the strict EU regulations rather than Switzerland's.

Rival Swiss-based traders Glencore and Trafigura said in July they had halted all Iranian oil trade, even though the Swiss government opted against following measures imposed by Washington and Brussels.

The measures have halved OPEC member Iran's crude oil export revenues, devaluing the rial currency and bringing financial hardship to millions of Iranians.

On top of the EU ban, Iran's four biggest oil buyers - China, India, Japan and South Korea - have reduced their imports by at least a fifth to secure exemptions from the threat of U.S. financial sanctions on their companies.

Vitol last year earned record revenue of $297 billion, a near-five-fold increase since 2004. It does not reveal profits.

Fuel oil is a small part of its trading portfolio, accounting for $24 billion of revenue last year compared to $105 billion from crude and $100 billion from other refined products.

Profit margins on oil trade are typically very low, but traders said Iran's difficulties in finding buyers because of sanctions are likely to have made for a fat profit margin for trading its fuel oil.

Ship-to-ship
Vitol acquired the Iranian fuel oil early this month in a ship-to-ship transfer off Malaysia from a National Iranian Tanker Company (NITC) vessel, the Leadership, onto a Vitol-chartered tanker, the Ticen Ocean.

The Ticen Ocean was sub-contracted by Vitol for floating storage off the Malaysian port of Tanjung Pelepas from Titan Petrochemicals, a Hong Kong company which itself hired it from shipowner Frontline of Norway.

Frontline said Titan had told it the ship was not used to store Iranian oil. "Our only counterpart in this matter is Titan and they have said it is not correct that there has been Iranian oil on the boat," said Frontline CEO Jens Martin Jensen.

Titan did not return calls or emails seeking comment.

The Leadership left Iran's main oil export terminal at Kharg Island during the week of August 23, passing through the Strait of Malacca before disappearing from freight tracking systems off the Malaysian coast on September 4. Since sanctions were imposed, Iranian vessels have frequently switched off the onboard 'black-box' transponders used in the shipping industry to monitor vessel movements.

Industry sources in Tanjung Pelepas who monitor shipping transfer operations in Malaysian waters said Vitol later brought alongside another tanker, the Speranza, to replace the Ticen Ocean as floating storage. The Speranza, owned by China's Sino Shipping Holdings, arrived at Tanjung Pelepas on September 13-14, Reuters data shows.

Vitol also transferred some of its fuel oil from the Ticen Ocean between September 11-12 to another vessel, the Kamari I, according to Reuters data. That cargo was delivered to Vitol's storage terminal on the Malaysian island of Tanjung Bin, inside Tanjung Pelepas port, one trading source said.

'Special blend'
Traders said the company then blended the oil in storage with fuel oil sourced from Europe, calling it a "special blend" and offered it to Chinese traders. Reuters was given a copy of the specifications of the cargo on offer.

Vitol first asked a $30 premium to Singapore's benchmark 180-centistoke fuel oil price, said a Chinese industry executive who manages some of China's many small, independent refineries, known as teapots. That would have valued the 2-million-barrel cargo at about $250 million.

"Because the offer was too high, our people didn't really carry on the talks," the Chinese executive said. "Vitol also appeared not in a hurry to sell, so was not being aggressive."

Two Asian refinery buyers who were then offered the oil said the asking price was cut to a $12-$14 premium to Singapore benchmark prices, or around $175 million in total.

"Vitol is offering the cargo as a special blend to teapot refiners in Shandong," said a China-based trader. "No one's agreed to buy the Vitol cargo. I declined because I wasn't sure of the quality and specifications."

At the time of publication it is not known whether Vitol had agreed a deal to sell the oil.

Insurance
Vitol's use of the Ticen Ocean to store Iranian oil could put the tanker's insurance at risk. The vessel is insured by the North of England P&I Association.

The EU's oil embargo bans EU insurers who underwrite around 90 percent of the world's tanker fleet from providing cover for ships carrying Iranian oil.

Mike Salthouse, director of North Insurance Management, which acts as manager for the North of England P&I Association, said it would not provide cover for tankers storing or transporting Iranian oil.

"We would not expect to continue to insure any fleet actively engaged in this trade," he said, but declined comment specifically on the Ticen Ocean.

Obesity promotes prostate cancer by altering gene regulation

Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in men and early treatment is usually very successful. However, like other cancers, obesity increases the risk of aggressive prostate disease. New research, published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Medicine, finds that the fat surrounding the prostate of overweight or obese men with prostate cancer provides a favorable environment to promote cancer growth.

Fat is a generally underrated organ. Not only is it an energy store but it secretes a wide range of growth factors, cytokines and hormones, including leptin and adiponectin, and is a major player in the immune system, which protects the body from infection and disease. But too much fat can cause these systems to go haywire and can increase risk of diabetes, cardiovascular disease and cancer.

An international team led by Prof Gema Fr?hbeck and Dr Ricardo Ribeiro analyzed fat, from around the prostate, taken from patients undergoing surgery for prostate disease. Samples were included from men with benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH), prostate cancer (PC), and from men where their cancer was no longer confined to the prostate. The men were also classified as being either lean (BMI 25).

Regardless of type of prostate disease the overweight men had different levels of gene activity in the fat surrounding their prostates compared to the lean men. This included genes which encode proteins involved in immunity and inflammation (such as LEP, which encodes the protein leptin), and cell growth and proliferation (including ANGPT1 which encodes angiopoietin 1), fat metabolism and programmed cell death.

Additionally the activity of more genes was altered between hyperplasia and prostate cancer, and between cancer and non-confined cancer, suggesting a gradual increase in dysregulation during cancer progression.

Prof Fr?hbeck explained, "Both LEP and ANGPT1 encode proteins which are thought to have roles beyond adipose tissue itself, especially because prostate cancer cells have receptors for leptin, and angiopoietin 1. Taken together with the abnormal activity levels of other genes they will ultimately foster fat mass growth, reduce immune surveillance, and promote the formation of new blood vessels, so producing a favorable environment for prostate cancer progression."

Dr Ribeiro continued, "In an increasingly obese population, understanding how fat, especially the fat surrounding the prostate, can influence the growth and severity of prostate cancer may provide an opportunity for implementing personalized lifestyle and therapeutic strategies."

This article is part of the thematic series Metabolism, Diet and Disease from BMC Biology and BMC Medicine.

Having Any Perimenopause Symptoms? | Menopause Coach ...

I love this article.? It is clear that Jennifer makes her own choices about her body, even against her doctor?s advice if she feels it is not in her best interest.? She has a great attitude about perimenopause (and menopause) which helps to pave her way through this transition with grace and ease.?

need help with perimenopause symptoms 400x300 Having Any Perimenopause Symptoms?

If you have perimenopause symptoms, why not investigate the herbal suggestions in this article as Jennifer did.? You will want to do your research or contact an Herbalist who is experienced in that area.

Another solution is to read about and become familiar with what Dr. John Lee recommended.? By using a ?real? progesterone cream to balance the estrogen that you are still producing, you will alleviate many of your symptoms and challenges if you are estrogen dominant. ? Many women become estrogen dominant which puts everything way out of whack.? There is not one solution for every person.?

The Pause That Refreshes ? Written by Nashauna Drummond, Lifestyle Coordinator

In her mid-50s, menopause was not on Jennifer?s radar.? That was until early last year.? ?One day, I was sitting at my desk and I felt a very cold sensation run from the top of my head to my neck,? she told Flair of her first symptom.

?It felt like someone had put an ice cold towel over me and it felt nice. It happened at least 10 times each day for three weeks and it never occurred to me that it was menopause.?

One day, she mentioned it to her fianc? who told her that it sounded like cold sweat.? ?I thought, ?You know he could be right???? But if that?s what menopause was, bring it on!?

But then came the hot flashes accompanied by raging headaches.?? ?I didn?t consult my doctor because I knew he would recommend hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and having attended two major menopause medical conferences in the United States where all the world?s leading experts in the field agreed that HRT invariably led to extreme side-effects ? including heart disease, I was not going that route.

I spoke to older women, including my mom, and they recommended black cohosh, evening primrose and red clover capsules ? all natural supplements that minimize the symptoms.

I have been taking them since, along with vitamin E, and trying to eat healthier ? adding more broccoli and mushrooms to my diet.?

Although she didn?t know it at the time, Jennifer was actually peri-menopausal.? This is the stage before menopause when the ovaries gradually produce less oestrogen and which lasts until menopause when the ovaries stop releasing eggs.

??In January 2011, my period stopped but resumed in April, so I visited my doctor and he told me I was peri-menopausal.? You only become menopausal when your monthly cycle stops for 12 consecutive months. ? In October they became longer lasting ? seven to 10 days.?

?By November, Jennifer?s menstrual cycle again stopped, but resumed in February 2012.? This time they were unbearably long ? two-three weeks ? so she again consulted her doctor.

Hysterectomy

??He recommended a hysterectomy.? I wasn?t having it.? I never hated my periods.? ? She added she had heard many horror stories from women she knew and what they went through? with the hormone imbalance that not having your ovaries would lead to. ?

?So I didn?t like the idea.? I just asked for something to minimize the length of my periods.?

?Since May, Jennifer?s periods have again stopped and her hot flashes have intensified.? ?I will break into sweat at the most inopportune time,? she told Flair.

??I have a lot of friends who are doctors whom I have spoken to, so I am prepared to deal with it.? I also know a lot of women who didn?t take HRT.?

She added that since her first symptom, she has only experienced one violent rage which was associated with her headaches that make her very sensitive to noise.

??In the initial months of the hot flashes, I got agitated.? Now I feel a cool sensation.? Though my entire body feels hot, below my knees I feel a cool sensation like air-conditioning.? I?ve conditioned myself not to fan; I keep napkins to mop my brow and if I feel hot I will dab it lightly.? In the nights, it will be an on and off with the covers.? I hope it doesn?t get worse and hope I continue to ride it through comfortably.?

Her comfort level has also remained intact as it relates to her sexual urges which most women complain about, especially vaginal dryness. ?A lot of my friends complain that they get turned off from sex.? I have none of those issues.? I?m glad that I have a man who really understands the ageing process. He is totally understanding.

?Menopause for me is the pause that refreshes.? I am not dreading it, I have accepted it as yet another miracle milestone in a woman?s fascinating life.?

Do you have perimenopause symptoms?? This time in your life does not have to be a bad experience!? There are choices we have that our moms never had.? By changing your diet, exercising and reducing stress, your hormones will be in a better place.? Another solution for you to try is Progesterone Creme.?

As I said above, Dr. John Lee studied progesterone for years and since the estrogen drops in your body (for the majority of women) and progesterone decreases considerably, by adding a true progesterone creme, it will help to balance the estrogen that is still in your body.? GM recalls midsize cars to fix transmission cables

(AP) ? General Motors is recalling nearly 474,000 Chevrolet, Pontiac and Saturn cars to fix a transmission problem that can cause the cars to roll away unexpectedly.

The recall affects 2007-2010 Chevrolet Malibus, Pontiac G6s and Saturn Auras in the U.S., Canada and Mexico as well as a small number of exports. All the cars have four-speed automatic transmissions.

GM says part of the transmission cables can break. When this happens, the shifter can show that the car is in park when it's really in gear. GM says it knows of four crashes from the problem but no injuries.

Dealers will put a retainer over the end of the cables or replace them. Owners will be told by letter when to set up appointments with dealers.

Real Estate with Ruben: Home Staging Should Include the Male ...

By Ruben Gonzalez Jr

Prudential California Realty?(DBA)??

?????????

??????????? Professional home stagers consult with homeowners on ways to sell their homes quickly and for the most money possible, but often lost in the design process is the fact that men are involved in buying decisions as well.

?

??????????? When having your home staged, it?s important to remember to appeal to both sexes and do some things that will pique a man?s interest just as much as a woman?s.

?

??????????? Professional stagers take into account buyer demographics, buying psychology, and utilize design elements in planning out the rooms and space and the use of lighting and its effect on the space. Don?t be afraid to let them know if the home is leaning too far on the woman?s side.

?

??????????? Women tend to look for cozier settings or rooms that facilitate intimate conversations, while males gravitate toward rooms with gadgets, televisions and electronics.

?

??????????? Open spaces and higher ceilings are also a draw for men as psychologically they have a larger sense of personal space. Professional stagers with men in mind try to create rooms where a man can feel as if he can walk through the house easily without stepping around all sorts of furniture.????

???

??????????? When it comes to men, the garage and yard tend to be high up on the priority list, so it?s important to get these areas as perfect as possible.

?

??????????? Garages that have painted walls, clean floors and enough storage for various male-oriented hobbies will impress. Shelf space is almost always looked at as a good thing here and a place to hang tools or a workbench would make a fine addition to attract male buyers. And remember, an empty garage looks much bigger than one with a car parked in it.

Russia bolsters influence in Kyrgyzstan as US nears airbase exit

Russian President Vladimir Putin, visiting the central Asian republic of Kyrgyzstan Thursday, cut a new deal with Kyrgyz leader Almazbek Atambayev that will strengthen Moscow's military and economic presence in the former Soviet region even as it sets the stage for the departure of the US from Manas airbase near Bishkek in about two years.

Mr. Putin won a 15-year extension of Moscow's lease on Kant airbase, where about 600 Russian servicemen and a small squadron of warplanes are based. Kyrgyzstan's request for a rent increase above the $4.5 million Moscow has payed annually since 2003 was not met, but Putin agreed to gradually write off Kyrgyzstan's nearly half-billion dollar debt to Russia.

In exchange, Moscow will take large stakes in several Kyrgyz industries, especially the Dastan torpedo plant near the remote mountain lake Issyk Kul, which post-Soviet Russia has long coveted, because it manufactures the hyperfast VA-111 Shkval underwater rocket, one of the world's most advanced weapons.

Vladimir Putin 101: A quiz about Russia's president

As for the US airbase at Manas, which the Kremlin has repeatedly asked Kyrgyzstan to close, Mr. Atambayev said he recently informed Washington that the US will have to vacate the facility after its lease expires in 2014. A joint statement by the two leaders said that "Kyrgyzstan intends to transform the transit center at Manas airport into a civilian facility free of any military component." Putin denied that he played any role in the Kyrgyz decision to shut the US out of Manas.

But the years of secret infighting between Moscow and Washington over the base's fate was recently discussed in a public lecture by US Moscow Ambassador Mike McFaul, who subsequently faced a severe rebuke from the Russian Foreign Ministry for bringing it up. Kyrgyzstan, a mountainous republic of 5.5 million at Asia's heart, never had much in the way of industry or resources and has been badly buffeted by two revolutions in the past decade.

By some accounts, the Kyrgyz government is nearly bankrupt after running a budget deficit of 30 percent for the second year in a row. In addition to debt relief, Russia is offering up to $5 billion to help build hydroelectric plants and other desperately needed infrastructure. Growing Russian influence tracks well with Putin's aim of creating a Eurasian Union of former Soviet states to offset US influence and restore some of the economic and strategic synergies that Russia lost when the USSR was disbanded two decades ago. Moscow, increasingly alarmed over the threat of regional chaos when NATO forces leave Afghanistan in 2014, is also moving to shore up its ties with Tajikistan, another former Soviet republic that borders Afghanistan.

"A Russian military presence both in Tajikistan and Kyrgyzstan is a significant factor in stability," Putin said in a joint news conference with Atambayev on Thursday. Atambayev appeared to agree. "We are entwined with Russia by a common history and destiny," he replied. "We cannot have a future without Russia."

Lyon Porter | Town Residential | Hockey Real Estate Agent

Lyon Porter as a member of the Richmond Riverdogs and his Town Residential headshot

Many New York sales agents have come to the business of real estate from a wide range of other professions. In an ongoing series, TheRealDeal.com will profile brokers for whom selling properties represents a major career transition.

Real estate pros have the reputation for being aggressive. Lyon Porter, a former professional hockey player who recently began selling commercial and residential real estate at Town Residential, embraces that. Porter sat down with The Real Deal to discuss what his fellow athletes look for in a New York City apartment, the nameless neighborhood that he calls home, and how his sports injuries prepared him to sell New York real estate.

Which teams did you play for?
I played for the Adirondack Frostbite, the Syracuse Crunch and the Richmond Riverdogs. I lived in 10 cities in 15 years. I left home at 16.

Where was home?
Shaker Heights, Ohio.

Do you still paly recreationally?
I do. I play over at Chelsea Piers. I play with a group of guys who also used to be professionals.

Did you get terribly injured?
I cracked a hip socket, separated both shoulders, got a lot of stitches. ? These aren?t all my real teeth. The first breath of cold air after chipping a tooth is no fun. And getting your nose broken is probably one of the worst, because you can?t see.

Why?
Your sinuses, they kind of ? come out.

Your nose been put back together very well.
Thank you. I still can?t breathe out of it.

How many times was it broken?
I don?t know. I fought a lot.

How has that helped or harmed you as a real estate pro?
It?s like what they say about boxing: ??it?s more important to be able to take a punch than to give a punch.? So, in real estate you take a lot of punches. You get a lot of doors closed in your face. In hockey there is constant rejection ? having to try out, having to move [cities], having to go forward when people say you shouldn?t. Especially being from the U.S. when most players are Canadian [can be tough].

Was there anti-American sentiment?
I was often the only American on my team. But having to go up against those obstacles was helpful, because now I don?t mind someone saying no to me.

It?s mental toughness, basically. The same in real estate as in the rest of life.
Yeah, it?s like when you get traded, you can?t take it personally. The only thing you can control is how you perform. And it?s the same in real estate.

Is there a particular kind of clientele you specialize in? Do you find you can bond with clients over professional sports?
I do have some clients who are professional athletes.

Like who?
I?m not going to name names. But I have some pro hockey players and other pro athletes. I can relate to them, to having a life on the road. I can relate to not wanting to live in a hotel.

What do you think professional athletes need in a home?
I think actually having a home, since they are on the road so much, it?s very important to them. And almost exclusively athletes buy condos [instead of co-ops] because they might get traded the next day.

And they must like full service amenities?
Well, we have the Town Residential concierge service. It?s nice to be able to give them something to lean on. It?s a free service to clients. It?s been an amazing thing for this type of clientele. Even just for a busy New Yorker, being able to get a reservation at the Nomad tonight if you want it.

Before joining Town you were in graduate school?
Yes, I had worked in real estate and did my masters in development at NYU?s Shack Institute [of Real Estate]. I did full -time [but] at night. And I also was still working with C&K Properties, assisting them with private equity real estate acquisitions.

How did working in private equity inform your knowledge of real estate?
Brooks Crowley, who I worked with there, was invaluable. Two guys who started from scratch. They owned 3 million square feet in the city. ?[The experience] really helped me with my investor clients and developers I am working with now, to see it through their eyes.

Where do you live?
In the 20s. It?s just below Murray Hill, a lot of people would call it Kips Bay. If you look at it on a taxi map, it?s a gray area.

What kind of branding do you think it should get?
I
t used to be called Rose Hill, but that never caught on in the popular nomenclature. I don?t know if I would call it a name at this point though. I have a rent stabilized apartment so I didn?t choose the neighborhood, it chose me.

You aren?t gonna tell us how much you pay?
No. But it is a two bedroom, thank God, because I just had a son two months ago.

Congratulations. Do you want your son to play hockey?
He can play whatever he wants.

When it comes to hockey, can you tell when a kid is really young if they will be good?
Yeah, and they could tell that I was a terrible skater; I just loved hockey. I was never the skill guy. I made it really far as a really unskilled guy.

Did you make up for a lack of technique with aggression or something?
I did. I was a grinder. If I had to fight or hit someone, [I would].

Would you characterize yourself as a real estate pro in sort of the same way? Always willing to fight?
I think in this business, in this city, you have to have something extra. Whether it?s being able to take punches or being able to swim with sharks. Anyone successful has something extra, and I think I gained mine from hockey. When someone shuts the door in my face I just say, ?Ok, well I?ll knock on it again tomorrow.? I don?t mind hearing ?no,? in fact I don?t even hear it. And that?s why this business is a perfect fit for me.

Oral MS drug passes tests

BG-12 suppresses relapses

Web edition : 5:32 pm

People with multiple sclerosis might soon have a new option for controlling their disease with pills instead of shots. Two studies in the Sept. 20 New England Journal of Medicine demonstrate that a variation on a drug used against psoriasis for years in Germany holds off MS relapses and has minimal side effects.

?These data look good. Both studies show a reduction in relapses with really pretty robust effects,? says Clyde Markowitz, a neurologist at the University of Pennsylvania who wasn?t involved with the trials.

The drug, called BG-12, has been submitted to the U.S. Food and Drug Administration for approval by the biotech company Biogen Idec. Markowitz expects it to get approved. ?It would be a clear benefit to the MS population to have another option,? he says. If approved, BG-12 would be the third oral drug available to treat MS.

The disease results when the immune system attacks the fatty myelin sheaths coating nerves in the central nervous system, leading to impaired muscle control, balance, vision and speech. BG-12, or dimethyl fumarate, has anti-inflammatory, cell-protective and antioxidant effects, which earlier work suggested could suppress the aberrant immune reactions in MS patients.

Scientists in both studies recruited MS patients and randomly assigned some in each group to BG-12 or placebo tablets. In one of the studies, an additional group was randomly assigned to get an injectable MS drug called glatiramer acetate (Copaxone). In other respects the studies were nearly identical, each enrolling more than 1,000 MS patients, ages 18 to 55, in 28 countries apiece, for two years of treatment. Both trials included a mix of North American and European researchers.

On average, patients getting BG-12 went from 72 weeks to more than 90 weeks before experiencing a relapse, compared with 30 and 38 weeks among those assigned a placebo in the two studies. Magnetic resonance imaging also revealed strikingly fewer lesions in the brains of patients after two years of BG-12 than in those on placebos.

The results come at a heady time in MS research, with several drugs in testing and some newly approved in the past decade. The most recent was the oral drug teriflunomide (Aubagio), which the FDA cleared on September 12. It joins another oral drug, fingolimod (Gilenya), which was approved in 2010. Two injectable cancer drugs have also shown promise against MS (SN: 2/23/08, p. 125; SN: 11/22/08, p.9), and these or similar versions of them are awaiting FDA approval as MS drugs. For years, the standard treatment has been injectable anti-inflammatory interferon beta.

The oral drugs are more convenient to use than interferon and the other injectables, boosting patient compliance, says Robert Fox, a neurologist at the Cleveland Clinic who coauthored one of the studies. The oral drugs also seem more effective at preventing relapses than the injectables, with the exception of a potent injectable called natalizumab (Tysabri), which was first approved in 2004. But natalizumab stumbled on early reports of side effects and was pulled off shelves temporarily. It?s been back on the market for six years, with label warnings (SN: 3/4/06, p. 131).

It may take years before any of the oral drugs proves better overall than the others. ?It is not clear at the moment how to advise patients about the new oral drugs, but the overall benefits-to-risk assessment, as of this month, may favor fumarate,? meaning BG-12, says physician Allan Ropper of Brigham and Women?s Hospital in Boston, writing in the same New England Journal of Medicine issue. ?The two-decade safety record of fumarate in psoriasis lessens concern about long-term risk,? he says.

Markowitz says that advances in understanding the immune system are driving the progress against MS. ?If you can modulate immune functions, you can control disease activity,? he says.

While the spate of new drugs has given patients and doctors more options, it also has made it more difficult to test drugs. ?With those other therapies [available], it?s a lot harder to keep patients ? from an ethical point of view ? on a placebo for two years,? Fox says.

Engineering a better hip implant

ScienceDaily (Sep. 18, 2012) ? University of Iowa researchers have determined that thigh size in obese people is a reason their hip implants are more likely to fail.

In a study, the team simulated hip dislocations as they occur in humans and determined that increased thigh girth creates hip instability in morbidly obese patients (those with a body mass index (BMI) greater than 40). The researchers propose that surgeons modify surgical procedures to minimize the chance of dislocation in obese patients and consider other designs for hip replacement implants.

"We have shown that morbidly obese patients' thighs are so large that they are actually pushing each other outward and forcing the implant out of its socket," says Jacob Elkins, a UI graduate student and first author of the paper published in the journal Clinical Orthopaedics and Related Research. "Studies have shown up to a 6.9-fold higher dislocation rate for morbidly obese patients compared to normal weight patients.

Total hip replacement gives mobility back to people who experience debilitating hip joint pain. According to the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Disease (NIAMS), 231,000 total hip replacements are performed annually in the U.S. and more than 90 percent of these do not require follow-up repair or replacement. But when an implant fails, it is painful, and costly. Studies have shown that dislocation ranks as the most common reason for failed implants, according to Medicare hospital discharge data.

A hip implant is a ball-in-socket mechanism, designed to simulate a human hip joint. However, it lacks the connective tissue that stabilizes a normal hip joint, meaning the ball portion of the implant can sometimes "pop out."

Clinical studies point to an increased dislocation risk among obese patients with total hip replacements, but the reasons have remained unclear. Dislocation requires extreme range of motion, such as flexing at the waist. Given the reduced range of motion in the obese, why do they experience more dislocations?

Using a computational model he created to understand how a hip implant works in patients, Elkins and research collaborators analyzed 146 healthy adults and six cadaver pelvises. They examined the effects of thigh-on-thigh pressure on the hip implant during a wide range of movements from sitting to standing. With the ability to simulate movements in human bodies of varying sizes, the team could test different implants. They also looked at the various implants' performances in different body types. They used a hip-center-to-hip-center distance of 200 millimeters as a basis for their analyses of thigh girth for eight different BMIs, ranging from 20 to 55.

The research team ran computations to examine the joint stability of several different hip implants. They tested two femoral head sizes (28 and 36 millimeters), normal versus high-offset femoral neck, and multiple cup abduction angles.

The researchers report three main findings:

1) thigh soft tissue impingement increased the risk of dislocation for BMIs of 40 or greater;

2) implants with a larger femoral head diameter did not substantially improve joint stability;

3) using an implant with a high-offset femoral stem decreased the dislocation risk.

"The larger your legs are, the more force that goes through the hip joint," Elkins says. "It's a simple concept. When your thighs are real big, they push on the hips."

Surgeons treating obese hip implant patients can use the study findings to select better implant designs and modify their surgical procedures to minimize the chance of dislocation in obese patients, the researchers say.

"The number one thing surgeons can do is what is called a 'high offset femoral stem,'" says senior author Thomas Brown, UI professor of orthopaedic surgery, referring to the portion of the implant that attaches to the patient's upper thigh bone, or femur. "Basically, the implant's femoral stem is longer, so it effectively shifts the leg further away from the center rotation of the joint. The thighs then would need to move even further inward before they would abut one another and generate the forces necessary for dislocation."

The study was published online on Aug. 21. Elkins is in the UI's College of Engineering Biomechanical Engineering Program and the Carver College of Medicine's Medical Scientist Training Program.

Other authors are Matej Daniel, assistant professor at Czech Technical University in Prague, Czech Republic, and former Fulbright Research Scholar at UI Hospitals and Clinics; Douglas Pedersen, UI research associate professor of orthopaedic surgery; Bhupinder Singh, UI doctoral candidate in physical therapy; John Yack, UI associate professor of physical therapy; and John Callaghan, UI professor of orthopaedic surgery.

The National Institutes of Health, the Veterans Administration, and the National Center for Resource Resources funded the research.

Upgrade to iOS 6 Right Now [Ios]

Upgrade to iOS 6 Right NowAlthough iOS 6 won't see an official release until September 19th, you can install the final version right now even if you're not a developer thanks to some anonymous public postings of the software update files. Here's how.

Note: We updated a handful of iDevices using these files and encountered no issues, but because we're unable to verify them all we don't know problems won't arise. This process worked for us when we tested with an iPad, and iPod touch, and an iPhone, but there's always a chance you could run into an issue. Please be aware that there's some risk involved before you upgrade.

Backup First!

Before you do anything, back up your iDevice with iTunes. In the past, the early upgrade process worked for some but not for everyone. The results may be the same this time around, though we've upgraded to the final version of iOS 6 without issue. Regardless of whether or not things work out you will need to restore your device so back it up!

Download iOS 6

Thanks to a public posting on RapidShare, you can download the Golden Master version (essentially identical to the final release coming next week) of iOS 6 for your device without logging into the Apple Developer Center. Here are the download links. Choose the type of device you want to update:

The iOS 6 update may require a later version of iTunes than you have installed. Update your copy before moving on.

Install the Update

To install iOS 6 on your device, follow these instructions:

  1. Open up the disk image (.dmg) and find the iPhone Software Update file (.ipsw) for your device. Drag it to the desktop, or a folder of your choosing. (Windows users will need a tool like 7-Zip to do this, and will need to open the .hfs inside the .dmg as well.)
  2. Open iTunes and connect your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, to your computer.
  3. If your device isn't automatically selected in iTunes, select it and go to the "Summary" tab.
  4. Hold down the option key (OS X) or the shift key (Windows) and click the Restore button. Browse to the .ipsw file you downloaded, select it, and wait for the update to finish.
  5. If necessary, restore your device from backup and sync with iTunes.

That's it. If you follow those steps, you'll be up and running iOS 6 in no time.

Perceived insults to Islam trigger Muslim anger

Muslim anger over perceived Western insults to Islam has exploded several times, most recently in Tuesday's attacks against U.S. diplomatic posts in the Middle East in which U.S. ambassador to Libya Chris Stevens and three other Americans were killed.

The violence, fueled mostly by religious zealots, reflects the tension between Muslims and the secular West that followed the wars in Afghanistan and Iraq.

Here are some of the most serious incidents:

MUHAMMAD CARTOONS

The September 2005 publication by the Danish newspaper Jyllands-Posten of cartoons depicting the Prophet Muhammad unleashed a wave of violent protests by Muslims, who believe any image of their religion's founder is forbidden. Dozens of people were killed in weeks of protests that included violent attacks against Danish missions in Syria, Iran, Afghanistan and Lebanon. At least six people were killed in a June 2008 suicide bombing at the Danish embassy in the Pakistani capital, Islamabad. Al-Qaida claimed responsibility, citing anger over the cartoons. The Danish government described the Muslim backlash as the country's worst international crisis since World War II.

SATANIC VERSES

British author Salman Rushdie's 1988 novel, "Satanic Verses," inspired in part by the life of Muhammad, won kudos from critics in Britain but prompted outrage among many Muslims, who considered it slanderous. Deadly riots against the book erupted in Islamabad, Pakistan and Mumbai, India, and the book was banned in South Africa, India, Pakistan, Bangladesh and several other countries. Iran's Ayatollah Ruhollah Khomeini issued a religious edict in 1989 calling for Rushdie's death, leading the writer to live in hiding for a decade. Although Rushdie was never physically harmed, his Japanese translator was stabbed to death in 1991 and his Italian translator was injured in a stabbing that same year

VAN GOGH ASSASSINATION

Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh, an outspoken critic of Islam whose film "Submission" criticized the treatment of Muslim women, was shot dead in November 2004 as he bicycled in the capital of the Netherlands, Amsterdam. A 26-year-old Dutch citizen of Moroccan origin, Mohammed Bouyeri, was convicted of the murder and sentenced to life imprisonment. Van Gogh's assassination set off a wave of more than 170 small reprisal attacks against mosques and churches over the following weeks, according to a report by the Anne Frank Foundation and the University of Leiden.

"BURN A QURAN DAY"

A 2010 call by Florida preacher Terry Jones to burn Qurans on the ninth anniversary of 9/11 alarmed the U.S. military, which feared the move would endanger the lives of American troops fighting Islamist extremists in Afghanistan and Iraq. Although Jones called off the burning, thousands of Afghans encouraged by the Taliban set fire to tires in the streets of the Afghan capital, Kabul, and other cities and chanted "Death to America." Police in a province near Kabul fired shots in the air to disperse a crowd trying to storm the governor's residence.

Jones' congregation went ahead with a Quran burning in March 2011, triggering protests across Afghanistan after video of the ceremony was posted on the Internet. In the most violent protest, hundreds of protesters stormed a U.N. compound in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan, killing seven foreigners, including four Nepalese guards.

MORE QURAN BURNING

In February, U.S. soldiers at Bagram prison in Afghanistan burned 315 copies of the Qurans and other religious materials that had been taken from Bagram's facility library for disposal. Word of the burning, which the U.S. said was unintentional, triggered scores of anti-American protests across the country which left more than 30 Afghans and six U.S. soldiers dead. They included two U.S. troops who were shot by an Afghan soldier and two U.S. military advisers who were gunned down at their desks at the Afghan Interior Ministry. Six U.S. Army soldiers received unspecified administrative punishment for the burning, the Pentagon announced last month.

Chris Brown: Tattoo is Art, I'm an Artist!

The recent Chris Brown tattoo hullabaloo has sparked controversy and a bunch of hilarious memes, but hasn't been addressed by the singer himself.

Until now.

Despite online chatter that the tat resembles a bruised, beaten Rihanna, if you ask Chris, this permanent new marking is nothing more than art:

Brit

Indeed, CB's publicist says it's "is a sugar skull (associated with the Mexican celebration of the Day of the Dead) and a MAC cosmetics design he saw."

Tattoo artist Peter Koskela backed the story up as well, while a source close to the "Don't Judge Me" singer revealed to celeb gossip magnet Perez Hilton:

“Naw man, that’s [isn't] Rihanna tatted on [Chris] no matter how much [you all are] trying to make it seem. Sorry, it [isn't] her. [Chris] loves women and you know he loves Ri, but come on now, he [isn't] about to tat a b**** on him. That [isn't] how he rolls.”

Word.

Careticker?s KnockedUp App Has Everything You Need To Know Before, After, And During Your Pregnancy

knocked-upCareTicker has created a mobile platform that provides all the necessary planning and coordination for pre- and post-procedure hospital stays. And it's planning to roll out a host of different apps for specific procedures, starting with one for expecting mothers. Launching at TechCrunch Disrupt SF, the idea is to simplify the hospital check-in process, help users manage post-procedure care and to connect patients with care providers after their hospital stay. The average patient is generally rushed out of the hospital after most procedures with a list of prescriptions and suggestions for care, as well as a suggested post-procedure care provider. But Careticker's mobile platform is designed to connect users with the help they need, showing which healthcare providers are nearby and which take their insurance. It also helps users to keep track of prescriptions and other needs post-procedure.

Apple announces fifth-generation iPod touch: 4-inch screen, 6.1mm thick, Siri included, starts at $299

Today at its iPhone launch event, Apple announced yet another piece of hardware: the fifth-generation iPod touch. As rumored, it has a 4-inch display, the same 326 ppi panel used on the new iPhone 5. As you might have guessed, this is also the thinnest iPod touch to date, measuring in at 6.1mm and weighing 88 grams (3.1 ounces). On the inside, it packs an A5 chip promising seven times the graphics performance of the last-gen model. The battery is rated for 40 hours of music playback, or eight hours of video -- a slight improvement over the last-generation touch.

The rear camera has also gotten an upgrade: it's now built on a 5-megapixel sensor, paired with a backside-illuminated f/2.4 lens. It also now shoots 1080p video, and Apple has also added image stabilization. And yes, it supports the same panorama shooting feature as the iPhone 5. The front camera, meanwhile, is 720p and supports FaceTime (over WiFi only, of course -- no 4G models here).

If that image stabilization feature doesn't do it for you, there's also a protruding button on the back, to which you can attach a wrist strap -- you know, so that if the shakes get really bad you at least won't drop the thing. Perhaps the biggest news, though, is that the new iPod touch has Siri built in, making it the first non-iPhone device from Apple to get this feature. Finally, it comes loaded with iO6 and if you don't know what that entails, well, we've got your feature summary right here.

The iPod touch will be available in two flavors: a 32GB model ($299) and a 64GB number ($399). It will be sold in five colors: "raw aluminum," black, blue, yellow and red, and a (PRODUCT) RED version will also be available. Three hundred bucks too pricey for your next PMP? The last-generation touch will remain on the market, with the 16GB one going for $199 and the 32GB version selling for $249.
